Calligraphy is visual art that arrange words and letters in a specified manner to transform them into an attractive image. It is also a form of decorative handwriting or hand lettering. Calligraphy, the word has its root in the Greek language. Kalli means beautiful and graphia means writing. The definition of calligraphy is “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skilful manner”. Calligraphy aims an art reaction, in which an in-depth meaning has interacted from the creator to eyes of the beholder. Calligraphy is handwriting that aims to be read. The different types of calligraphy include Western, Eastern Asian, Southern Asian and Islamic.

 

Western calligraphy had evolved from 10th-century writing. Latin script is Western calligraphy. This type has been since 600 B.C.

Eastern Asian calligraphy originates  from China, Korea and Asia. Each Asian dynasty has its own form of calligraphy. The Kaishu script is the traditional form of calligraphy in China.

Southern Asian calligraphy is calligraphy from Tibet, India and Nepal. The commonly used calligraphy for Buddhist texts is Ranjana script. Mostly this kind of writing is seen on letters of the Dalai Lama.

Islamic calligraphy is from the Arabic language. It often uses geometric patterns in its writing. According to many Muslims, calligraphy is the language of the spiritual and its considered to be important.

Different tools are used based on the type of writing. Western calligraphy authors use round-nipped pens or brushes to write and knives to remove any mistakes. Islamic writers use the pen on their works on treated palm leaves or burnt clay pieces

Calligraphy is about creating something uniquely beautiful, whether to celebrate a special occasion like marriage or to use it as a hobby in our everyday life. This kind of art impresses and attracts people to relax, and enhances the functions of the brain.

Who is a calligrapher?

A calligrapher is an art person who uses pen, paintbrush or markers to create his own style of writing and drawing collaborating with the ancient and different styles of hand-lettering in an attractive and expressive way.

A calligrapher can work as a freelancer taking his own customized orders from the clients making a profession out of calligraphy. A calligrapher may also get placed at a graphic design firm, or an educational institute which might help the firms create and write client invitations and at a wedding planning companies. The film and television companies might also place a calligrapher for images and props.

One of the most threat that is faced by calligraphers are rewriting issues. The content should be reworked on until they feel satisfaction among the works.

Calligraphers typically nowadays use calligraphy alphabets, creating beautiful texts and lettering at wedding and event invitations, logo designing, maps, memorial documents, religious art, cut stone inscriptions, quotes, poems, testimonials, certificates, letters, and stationery.

Calligraphers have a distinct personality. They are artistic individuals, they’re creative,  sensitive, articulate, and expressive.

A professional calligrapher has the option to work independently as a freelancer or in a calligraphy studio, though there are only a few different types of studios that still hire calligraphers.
